"I DIDN'T WANT A BUSINESS SELLING PRODUCTS TO FRIENDS"
After moving to Oklahoma to be with her husband, Katherine Pomerantz struggled to find work.
For two years, Katherine tried and failed to land a steady job. She bounced from one short-term gig to another, doing everything from line cook to office manager to acting.
Despite working long hours at various jobs, she only made $30,000/year.
Her husband was in graduate school. So money was tight. She needed a larger, steadier income so she could pay the bills, build their savings, and cover her husband’s tuition without them going into debt. As she says:
“This should have been an exciting time because we were newlyweds. But it was very, very hard. I was burnt out working 60-80 hours a week and making pennies. It wasn’t sustainable.”
Katherine shares how she struggled to find work.

"I NEVER THOUGHT OF MYSELF AS A BOOKKEEPER..."
Katherine stumbled across an article on The Penny Hoarder that showed her 30 ways to make money from home.
The one that stood out was bookkeeping. Because as a former theater major and actress, she knew many people in that profession struggled with money.
So she decided to become a bookkeeper to help creatives handle their finances.
“I had no experience with bookkeeping. But I knew it was a big pain point for artists, actors, and other people I worked with. So I thought, ‘I’ll go learn about this then help them.’”
Katherine shares why she chose bookkeeping.

"ARE WE GOING TO STARVE...?"
Katherine read the articles and watched the free videos on the Bookkeeper Business Launch website.
But she didn’t have the money to join the course. And she was afraid to spend that much on something that may not generate income for a while.
However, she knew her life wouldn’t get better unless she made a change. So in the summer of 2016, she borrowed money from her mother and joined the Bookkeeper Business Launch — despite feeling scared it wouldn’t work.
“I was so depressed, tired, and done living this way. I figured starting a bookkeeping business can’t be any harder than what I was already doing.”
Katherine shares what inspired her to finally join Bookkeeper Business Launch.

"THE TRAINING GAVE ME EVERYTHING I NEEDED..."
When Katherine joined the course, she was already working 16 hours a day at a festival. So she would watch the video lessons anytime she had a small break.
What immediately surprised her about the program was how comprehensive it was.
It taught her everything she needed to know about bookkeeping, getting clients, and keeping customers happy. She loved that it even had word-for-word scripts that told her exactly what to say to get someone to hire her.
Katherine realized that she didn’t need any other course or program to get her business off the ground.
“The course is impeccable…I never had to go anywhere else to learn about bookkeeping.
I did join other marketing courses, but most of what they taught me was stuff I already learned from Bookkeeper Business Launch.”

"I KNEW WHAT TO DO BUT WAS TOO SCARED..."
After going through the course, Katherine hit a major roadblock. She was afraid people wouldn’t take her seriously as a bookkeeper.
After all, she’s an artsy, outgoing, “messy” creative type. Not the stereotypical “buttoned up” accountant people are used to.
Katherine started to think that she might have to change her personality to get clients, which sucked the motivation out of her.
For the next few months, Katherine didn’t follow the steps laid out in Bookkeeper Business Launch for getting clients because her heart just wasn’t in it.
“I knew all the things I had to do. But I was nervous and afraid, so I didn’t do them.”
"I HAD SUCCESS QUICKLY..."
After eight months of struggle, Katherine met a woman who helped artists make money. She invited Katherine to give a presentation on bookkeeping to her Facebook group.
During this presentation Katherine shared the lessons she learned from Bookkeeper Business Launch… but with a twist! Katherine used her personality to “jazz up” the material and make fun.
A few of the people watching hired Katherine right away.
This was a major breakthrough for Katherine because she realized she didn’t have to be a “clean-cut accountant” to be successful in business. She realized that she could attract clients by being her fun, outgoing, “messy” self.
“Once I started being true to who I was and being more persistent I had success very quickly…”

"I DON'T FEEL ANY COMPETITION WITH OTHER BOOKKEEPERS..."
In Bookkeeper Business Launch, Katherine found several strategies to get clients. She learned how to reach out, make a personal connection, and give helpful advice so people would line up to work with her.
Katherine discovered that the more she let her personality shine during this process, the more success she had.
For example, she knew she was great on camera and on a microphone. So she reached out to podcast hosts and asked if she could come on their show to teach their listeners about money.
People would hear Katherine speak and immediately ask to hire her. All because she shared helpful information in a fun way.
“I don’t feel any competition with other bookkeepers. People hire me because they like my energy and personality. I’m messy but honest about it, and that’s how I’ve been successful.”

"I MESSED EVERYTHING UP..."
Katherine’s business began to take off. But then she made a huge mistake.
One day, Katherine realized she had done the books wrong for one of her clients.
This could have resulted in her losing her client and hurting her reputation. But, rather than freaking out, she simply talked it over with the client and went back to fix it.
Afterward, he was happy to continue working with her.
With time and practice, Katherine became so good at bookkeeping her clients began recommending her to others without Katherine even asking.
“I get letters all the time saying “We’ve never worked with a bookkeeper this smart before!”
Referral email from one of Katherine’s clients.

"I MADE $11,000 IN A WEEK..."
Before long, 95% of Katherine’s clients came through referral.
This is when Katherine decided to start paying people commission if they referred her to a new prospect. The first week she did this, she got $11,000 in new work!
Thanks to the podcasts and referrals, she continues to get emails every week from people asking to hire her.
This is when Katherine began turning clients away because she simply didn’t have time to help them all. To help, she started to hire a team to take care of her administrative and marketing tasks.
As a result of all this, Katherine doubled her income her first full year as a bookkeeper. Then tripled it the following year.
Today, two and half years after joining Bookkeeper Business Launch, she has 12 regular clients while taking on a few small jobs when she can.
“I don’t have to scramble to make money anymore. I know who I want to help and have a clear plan to grow my business.”

"LIFE IS GREAT NOW!..."
At the start of 2019, Katherine discovered something shocking: She had hit all of her savings goals! And she was able to help her husband pay for graduate school without taking on debt!
Since then, they’ve maxed out their retirement accounts. And they even have an “Emergency Fund” so she and her husband can stop working for a while if they choose to do so.
Best of all, Katherine works far less than she used to. And she has more freedom than ever. All because she’s financially secure and has a business that lets her spend her days how she wants.
“Life is great. I wake up and have my morning routine. I can go to the gym or go on lunch dates anytime during the week…”
Katherine shares how her life has changed.

"I HAVE A PURPOSE..."
Now that she has a team in place, Katherine is excited to grow her business even more.
In January 2019, she hosted an online summit. This helped her attract prospective clients, build connections, and be seen as a top authority in her industry.
Her next goal is to save enough money to put on a play at her local theater.
She also wants to continue helping creatives get their finances under control. So they have more freedom to work on their art.
“There should be more art and creativity in the world. Too many people don’t pursue it because they don’t think they can make money from it. But if you have financial freedom and stability, you can do what you want.”
